What Is A Root Canal?

Root canals are performed to repair an infected tooth before it risks the health of other teeth or becomes so damaged that it needs to be pulled. Dr. Jenkins will perform a root canal procedure when a cavity gets too big to support traditional fillings or other restorations. At this point, the bacteria has extended to the inside of the tooth and infected the roots, causing pain in the nerves and dental pulp.

Following your treatment, the tooth is capped with a permanent crown to restore its strength, function, and appearance. This will help strengthen your weakened tooth and prevent future infection.

Dr. David Jenkins is a native of Jackson, Georgia. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Valdosta State University with a Bachelors of Science degree in Biology with a minor in Chemistry. He achieved his dental degree from the Dental College of Georgia (also known as the Medical College of Georgia) in Augusta, Georgia.

How Do I Know If I Need A Root Canal?

What Can I Expect During A Root Canal?

To start, your dentist will take X-rays of your problem tooth and perform a dental exam. Next, your dentist will prepare your mouth for treatment by administering a local anesthetic. This will numb your tooth and prevent any discomfort you may experience.

Dr. Jenkins will perform the root canal by removing all of the decayed and infected material inside your tooth. When the tooth is cleaned and ready to house your porcelain crown, your dentist will take an impression. The impression will be sent to a dental laboratory and used to create your restoration.

Your dentist will place a temporary crown to protect your tooth until the permanent crown can be placed on your next visit. Setting the crown is a relatively simple and pain-free procedure. We use a bonding agent that permanently cements the crown in place. The final crown will look and feel natural.

A root canal can typically be performed in 30-60 minutes, depending on the position of the tooth in your mouth.
